After leading the sales and marketing operation for Holiday Inns in Europe from their London U.K. headquarters, John was appointed to the position of Vice President - Sales & Marketing - Canada, based in Toronto, with a coast-to-coast portfolio of sixty-six hotels. John was then appointed by InterContinental Hotels to the position of Vice President, Sales & Marketing - Europe - Middle East - Africa based in Brussels, Belgium. Here, John managed a multinational Sales and Marketing team in sixteen countries.
Following this, InterContinental Hotels Group appointed John to the position of Vice President of Worldwide Sales & Marketing Programs based in Atlanta and focused on the Global responsibility of developing business for all hotel brands namely, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, Crowne Plaza and Inter-Continental Hotels totaling 2,400 hotels, in 64 countries.
For the past five years Shingler has had numerous roles associated with Starwood and the Starwood brands initially with the Sheraton and Four Points by Sheraton branded hotels for a North East based hotel Management Company. Here he held the position of Senior Vice President – Business Development with responsibility for Franchise Relations, Revenue Management and Sales & Marketing for the company’s hotel portfolio.
Shortly after joining the ASFONA Board of Directors, Shingler was asked by Starwood to Co-Chair the “Four Points by Sheraton Repositioning Strategy Task Force” study. This two year assignment has led to the brands new found strength and growth opportunities.
Through the offices of ASFONA, Shingler has over the past three years, worked extensively with senior Starwood management on all aspects of the business including “Brand Standards”-“The SPG Program”- “Fees”- Brand Design Approval Process”- Revenue Management”- Re-Licensing & PIP’s”- “Field Marketing”- Brand Advertising”- “Property Management Systems” and many other areas. During this period Shingler has also represented Starwood Franchisees and Owners on the Starwood North Americas Owners Advisory Council.
More recently Shingler has been a leading member of the STDC management team responsible for the $50 million conversion of the historic US Grant Hotel in San Diego to Starwood’s “Luxury Collection” brand.
The ASFONA Board of Directors elected Shingler as President in February 2006 and requested he take on the addition role as CEO commencing May 2006.
John is a citizen of the U.S.A., Canada and the United Kingdom. He is a Certified Member of the "British Institute of Marketing" and has served as a Board Member of the "International Hotel & Restaurant Association" in Paris, France and the "British American Business Group" in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.
