USA TODAY is the nation’s top-selling newspaper. It is published at 36 locations in the USA and at four sites abroad. With a total average daily circulation of 2.3 million, it is available in 60 countries worldwide. The USA TODAY brand also includes: USATODAY.com, an award-winning news and information Web site that is updated 24 hours per day; USA TODAY Sports Weekly, a magazine for enthusiasts of baseball, professional football and NASCAR; and USA TODAY LIVE, the television arm of the USA TODAY brand that brings the spirit and quality of the newspaper to television.
As Vice President, Michael leads USA TODAY’s national circulation sales efforts — providing overall direction targeted to travel related sales in the U.S. Since 1999, he has led a team that develops amenity programs and implements strategies in the hotel, gaming, airline and restaurant industries. During this time, circulation from these markets has grown 45% — to nearly 1.2 million copies per day.
In 1985, Michael began his USA TODAY career in Kansas City — creating that market’s subscription telemarketing program. In 1989, he accepted a circulation management position in Chicago and progressed through the organization to become the market’s Chicago’s Regional Marketing Director. He successfully developed and implemented sales strategies targeted to hotel, retail, food service and education clients.
Michael currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Foundation (AH&LEF). He previously served on the board of the Hotel-Motel Association of Illinois and the Experience Lodging Taskforce — a workforce initiative of the American Hotel & Lodging Association.
After studies at Drake University, Michael joined the political consulting practice of Simmons/Schafer in Kansas City. There, he developed his organizational skills in numerous local, state and federal political campaigns.
He is married to Norma Graves and resides in McLean, Virginia.
USA TODAY is published by Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI). With 90 daily newspapers in the USA and a combined circulation of 7.3 million, Gannett is the USA’s largest newspaper group. It is also the second largest regional newspaper publisher in the United Kingdom. The company also owns 23 television stations that have a market reach of 20.1 million households.
